Yet More Memories

Getting ready for my high school reunion this weekend has me thinking of a lot of stuff from back then...

One of my very first jobs was as a cashier at a local family-owned hardware store. It was mostly guys working there, except the manager of the auto counter (go figure) and the cashiers. The fact that it was family-owned made a big difference, although a lot of businesses were family-owned back in the late 80s and early 90s. We used to want to work Sundays instead of having them off. On Sundays, the owner came in. You knew when he arrived because you could smell his swisher sweets cigarillos. Shortly after he showed up, one of his buddies who owned a local pizza restaurant would show up with our lunch - some of the greasiest, and most delicious, pizza and garlic breadsticks ever. Somehow I still wait for the pizza to follow when I smell a cigar. Huh.
