Sweet Spark: Maeve tries to do the right thing, but she truly doesn't think there's anyone who could understand her unique situation and help.
Maeve and her best friend Ash attempted a spell to reach the Lady of the Fens. They'd been told never to do such a thing, and it turns out it was indeed a very bad idea. Now 'unbound' magic is threatening what's left of Maeve's real magic. If it wins, Maeve would be completely insane and outcast. So her goal is to eliminate all of the magic from her, so she can just go on being herself, even without her lifetime of magic.
Maeve is pretty sold on her plan, until Ash unexpectedly finds her way into the 'Other Marsh' and in a conflict with some pretty bad stuff. Now the calls for Maeve and her originally strong magic are relentless - everyone expects her to save Ash and their legendary coven.
The story is told with an intriguing almost magical realism - the way the coven history and unbound magic work are common knowledge. If you don't already know, it's of course because you are not a witch. Maeve's research into the history, the Lady of the Fens, and what she may need to do save Ash and potentially still end the loss of herself to the unbound magic leads to some surprising meetings and conclusions.
Overall, the story and worldbuilding were unique and earned 4 out of 5 stars. This could definitely be the start of a series, with so much more history of the coven and future for Maeve and Ash left to tell. Readers who like witch stories and family drama won't want to miss this one.
