I realized the other day that I finally feel as if I know my way around the neighborhoods here nearly as well as I did in our old city. The first few times I drove out here with any friends, I'd get talking and quit paying attention...I needed some built in gps goggles or something to find my way across town!
Now? I think it's because it is a more rural area, but I recognize the landmarks people mention to me, and I can actually picture what they're talking about, instead of just nodding and smiling (as I did frequently when we were living in a marginally larger city).
Honestly, I think part of it is also that the community we're in now is more similar to the community where I grew up. It's not even city blocks and major streets, but it fits with the way I learned directions, if that makes any sense...
