Finally Did My Nails!

I used to L*O*V*E having my nails looking all pretty. I've spent time with acrylics and gels, but even when I haven't done that, I try to polish them regularly, so of course I've tried a few of the new nail products out there.

Right now my nails are decorated with Avon's NailArt in 'crazy for candy' pattern. Here's how they're looking after two days:
They're pretty good, overall. The 'spots' are just my photography skills (or lack thereof). Although in all honesty I'm looking forward to peeling them off after tomorrow. See, the ends are sort of rough feeling. I keep waiting for one of them to snag on something, and a few times I've pulled fuzzies off of them. They're like stickers, but they don't feel completely 'stuck' around the tips.

The most similar product I've used previously was Sally Hansen's stick on polish stuff (sorry - I don't have the exact name handy). I liked the results and the wear better from the Sally Hansen ones, but I think I was also making it a point to polish them every day too, so they didn't have much chance of wearing.

But in some ways that makes the Avon ones better - I'm pretty sure I'll be able to peel them right off, where with the Sally Hansen ones I went through A LOT of nail polish remover trying to get the white background behind the design to go away completely.

Either the Avon stickers or the Sally Hansen ones were superior to Jamberry nails, in my opinion. Jamberry's original nails came off within hours, even after following the directions exactly (Jamberry nails are actually applied using heat). I know they've changed they're formula or whatever, but I haven't wanted to invest to try them again, since I got my first set for free only to find they just didn't work with my nails. I asked to try the new ones, but a consultant only sent me one nail. That's nice, but I don't want to test the durability of having one nail not match the others for hopefully at least a couple weeks. I'd just feel self-conscious going around like that (although really I doubt most people would notice).

So there's my experience. I'll probably stick with my favorite method of keeping pretty nails - sitting at the computer and playing Candy Crush most nights. I alternate another coat of color one night with another clear coat the next, over and over....

Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Presents DRAGONS!

That's right - the circus is coming to the Palace of Auburn Hills again!! Yay!!

It's November 13 - 17, 2013 and you can get four tickets for just $18 each by using discount code 18MOM here.
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents DRAGONS is a once in a millennium event that honors The Year of the Dragon.  Circus performers from the farthest reaches of the earth have assembled for Ringling Bros.® Presents DRAGONS to showcase their astounding acts of bravery and astonishing athleticism. Ringling Bros.® Ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson presides over this fantastical celebratory tournament of circus champions that brings together mystic dragon lore with authentic circus feats. DRAGONS is a never-before-seen blend of renowned spiritual and real life legends that can be found only at The Greatest Show On Earth®!
The anticipation builds throughout Ringling Bros. Presents DRAGONS as Children Of All Agesbear witness to one phenomenal Ringling Bros. circus act after another, from Shaolin Kung Fu Warriors, charging Cossack riders, magnificent Asian elephants, fierce tigers to the frenzied Globe of Steel. As the audience observes these and even more real world displays that pay tribute to the dragon, their continued excitement will bring glimpses of the elusive beast. But, the big question remains; what will it take to lure a true dragon from its golden lair?
What's your favorite circus act? I think hubby likes the crazy motorcycle ball thingy (he'll LOVE the motorcycle show coming with DRAGONS). I like the big cats and the elephants, but my favorite part of the circus when I was growing up was going around collecting the autographs from all the clowns. I don't think I even see them doing that anymore.

Motivated Monday!

Yeah. I just totally made that up. I have a lot of stuff that's been stewing in my think tank that needs some action. Here's some of the things I will make progress on in the next week or so.

  • Send out gift cards to my team members who were active by October 15.
  • Send out a surprise gift to another team member ;)
  • Choose a winning team member from those who listed their bookings on our Facebook page for October.
  • Plan grocery shopping/menus starting November 1 (yes, that's this week!).
  • Scan/send water bill to tenants.
  • Pick up mail at the post office.
  • Start sending invites for '12 Days of Christmas' shows with Dove. Essentially, it's hosts choosing to do a catalog party in December, for which they'll get extra prizes (in addition to their regular host benefits). Want in? Anyone in the 48 contiguous states can do it - let me know :)
  • Find invites and work on list for my annual ornament exchange.
  • Finish planning my LEGO duplo House Party for November 16.
  • Keep working on my office (straightening and organizing).
  • Start a list of future blog posts for my new blog (details to follow ;) ).
  • Continually follow-up with all of my November and December chocolate hosts.
  • LAST swimming class tonight!

Disney Junior LIVE on Tour!! - Next Week!

I can never see too many shows!! I just love them - the excitement, and watching my kids have so much fun :)

Next up? Disney Junior LIVE on Tour - Pirate & Princess Adventure is playing for one day only. It's next Friday, November 1 at the Palace of Auburn Hills. I've heard the 7PM show is rapidly on its way to selling out, but you can still get tickets online for the 4PM show and save $5 by using code SOFIA at www.ticketmaster.com.

I hope Maggie isn't too confused - we've never seen Sofia! We did just recently start watching some Jake and the Neverland Pirates though, so I'm sure we'll find a few songs we recognize ;)

The show is on a Friday, but I know our school district is closed that day. What about yours?

Hope to see you there!

10 Random Things for Friday

  1. Hubby's been home a lot the last few days and under the weather, so I'm having a hard time keeping track of what day it is. Today does feel like Friday, but so did yesterday...
  2. Halloween is my very favorite holiday, but I feel like a phony about it lately. Hubby is leaving for a race on Halloween, so I didn't plan a costume at all for myself. I'll take the kids out, for sure, and we've obviously done a couple other fun events. I also haven't done much for decorating. Our basement storage room is a scary pile of boxes and I haven't even tried looking for my cool stuff.
  3. I do have some cool nail decals with a candy corn design. I got them from AVON, but I haven't put them on my nails yet. Probably tomorrow morning... The good thing about the decals is they don't have to 'dry.'
  4. My office was getting much better, but I've sort of plateaued in my efforts again.
  5. I did take care of all the required forms for the awesome leadership trip I earned from Dove Chocolate Discoveries. New Orleans in January - can't wait!!
  6. I still need to take a picture for ya'll of the awesome shawl my mom knit for me. I'm wearing it now - so cozy!!!
  7. Jack was so cute when I was playing with him after lunch today. He got a little cup out of the toy box and took a 'drink.' Then he brought it to me to share. Then I saw him walk around the whole room and give a drink to each of his Thomas the Train toys. Trains with faces - apparently he's not as freaked out as I am...
  8. I'm so excited that my new Erin Condren planner has already shipped! Want a discount on one of your own? Let me know! If I refer you via email, you'll get a $10 coupon.
  9. And I get a new hoodie next week! When all the girls on my daughter's baton team were getting theirs, I ordered one for me too.
  10. Exactly two months til Christmas. That doesn't sound like long at all...

22 October 2013

There's an App for That ;)

I'm not usually much of a techie (or is it techy?). But I do know my life is getting easier with my smartphone. Right now, it's my main source for Facebook (although I usually make a mental note of things I want to see, well, BIGGER), my only venue for Words with Friends, and a whole separate game of Candy Crush than my laptop. Hahahaha... Priorities, people!

It also alerts me promptly about my work emails, controls my tv via Chromecast, and -wonder of wonders- makes phone calls! No, it really does. Oh, and text messages.

You get my point. The one thing that does send me rushing to my laptop is checking out my company's sales stats. The phone screen is just too small for my old eyes to use the internet browser on it. But apparently there's an app that's made that easier for some people.

The goconnect app sets tasks and tracks them to completion for realtors. And their claim to fame is that it's user friendly enough to not require any actual training. Something I could use in 30-minutes flat? Sign me up - as soon as they have a sales/customer service version that isn't based around property. ;)

Fun Weekend!

We had an action packed weekend! It started way back on Thursday with Disney on Ice. Always fun! We knew Maggie would enjoy it - she always does. But we were delighted to watch Jack be totally captivated by the activity on the ice this time.

Although he wouldn't care yet, the princesses role in the whole show was not much. There were brief numbers in the first half by four or five princess (with their story and their prince) and then a bigger act with a bunch of the couples. But by the time the second half started, the princess were gone. We saw Stitch, the Incredibles, It's a Small World (possibly my favorite scene), and the Lion King, to name just a few. Can't wait to go again, now that the whole family enjoys it :)

Our Friday night was touch-and-go for a little bit. Maggie's been fighting a cough for a week now, and I finally decided to take her to the doctor and make sure that's all it was. Yup. The doctor recommended a homeopathic cough syrup (although I still haven't found the exact one he mentioned), and prescribed her an inhaler just for the weekend.

Armed with that, we headed to the Detroit Zoo's annual Zoo Boo on Friday night. Maggie was excited to don her Abby Bominable costumer, and of course there's no one Jack would rather be than Thomas the Train. In fact, Jack spent part of his evening chasing another Thomas costume, with a really cool bucket.

Still want to see the cool decorations and collect lots of loot at Zoo Boo for yourself? There's still one weekend left, although I'm not sure how many tickets are left.

Immune Boosting Tips - A Guest Post

Immune Boosting Tips for Cold and Flu Season

Before the dreaded cold and flu season starts, it is best to start building up your immune system. Let us look at some great tips for boosting your immune system to prepare for the cold and flu season. These tips will also work once the cold and flu season are in full swing.

When people think of immune boosting foods, they generally think of foods they do not like or know their children will not eat. However, just because it is healthy does not mean it will taste bad. Nor, does it mean you will have to “fight” with you kids to get them to eat it.

Of course, we cannot overlook the fact that toddlers and preschool age children do not like the taste of a lot of foods. However, we do have a few sneaky ways of getting those foods on to their plates and down the hatch without them even knowing it that I will share with you!

Vegetables

All green leafy vegetables have immune boosting properties as do broccoli, cauliflower, and green beans. Luckily, cheese (low fat is best) is also a healthy food that should be included in your diet year round. Most children love cheese, therefore one of our tips to get your child to eat their immune boosting healthy vegetables, especially broccoli and cauliflower, is to add cheese to it. If your child is a real picky eater try using other vegetables to give the cheesy main vegetable a face. Give the vegetable a little hair using string beans, peas for eyes, a carrot nose and a string bean mouth. If you are only preparing one vegetable, then just cut or dice small pieces for the eyes, nose and mouth of the same veggie. Children do love colorful food, something to keep in mind.

Fruits

Fruits are great immune boosting foods and most children and adults like them. Try to serve fruits that are high in vitamin C. All of the berry fruits are great too as they are loaded with antioxidants. These not only boost the immune system, they also fight off toxins, and germs that enter your body, keeping you healthier.

Of all the berries, the blueberry and strawberry are the most powerful. Strawberries can be dipped in low-fat cool-whip as a snack, breakfast or dessert. Blueberries are wonderful in whole grain pancakes. If you or your child is not fond of blueberries or strawberries, you can put them through the food processor and mix them in the batter.

Super Foods to Help Prevent Colds and the Flu

Sweet potato, mushrooms, garlic, lean beef, and chicken soup all top the food list for immune boosting foods to prevent the common cold and flu viruses. If you can get a few of these foods into your daily diet, your immune system will be happy and thriving and busy at work preventing colds and the flu.

Cold and Flu Fighting Hygiene Tips

During cold and flu season be sure to take your daily vitamin and mineral supplement. Have bottle of Echinacea on hand, if you start to feel under the weather follow the directions on the back of the bottle for dosages. Echinacea is a wonderful cold and flu-fighting supplement.

Always carry a small packet of tissues with you, hand sanitizer, and try to avoid opening public doors with your bare hand, use a tissue. If you get the sniffles or body aches, allow your body to rest, this will also help keep your immune system working well.

Menu Plan Monday

Boy, a menu plan certainly does make my day-planning easier.

MONDAY (10/14): We still have a few more weeks of swimming followed-by Chinese carry-out. And now it's even more justified, as Jack has asked to have mommy in the pool with him each week. Mommy is less than thrilled. Just three weeks left, and I do it to see him having fun.

TUESDAY (10/15): Kielbasa and shells & cheese. Maggie's been feeling a little run down for nearly a week. Hopefully one of her favorites will help her eat-up and stay strong against the germies.

WEDNESDAY (10/16): I've been dying to use my new Dove Chocolate Discoveries Red Wine Cooking Sauce. I may do a bit more research in the next day and a half, but I'm thinking a good cut of beef from our freezer plus half a jar or so of the sauce in the crockpot all day on low....

THURSDAY (10/17): We haven't had any OMG Taco Bake in a while...

FRIDAY (10/18): City Chicken, with rice and a fresh veggie. Unless we end up going to the Zoo Boo at the Detroit Zoo this night??

SATURDAY (10/19): We're definitely looking for quick and easy, as we have the Spooktacular Stroll at a local nature center this evening. The kids always love spaghetti (meat sauce for Jack, more noodles for Maggie...).

SUNDAY (10/20): While I'm not a big fan of bone-in steaks, I think we have a few of those still in the freezer. Probably a good day to grill em up!

MONDAY (10/21): The end is in sight! Just one more Monday after this one that is scheduled for swimming and carry-out dinner.

TUESDAY (10/22): Tacos. Hopefully I can make the time to go pick up some Rio Wraps sauce.

WEDNESDAY (10/23): We really enjoyed the Popcorn Chicken Parmesan one of my Facebook friends suggested previously. Even the leftovers got eaten! Let's try that again.

THURSDAY (10/24): Busy night! Tonight is the Spooky Spectacular at Maggie's school, or she may opt to go with mommy to vendor bingo (we haven't won anything lately - I think it's our turn!). Dinner is leftovers or whatever you can find.

FRIDAY (10/25): Mommy's got chocolate work one way or another. Either I've got a tasting party scheduled, or if that doesn't pan out (remember, I'm writing this almost two weeks in advance), I've offered to step in at a fundraiser.

SATURDAY (10/26): This is the weekend before daddy leaves for another race. His availability will be pretty much non-existent for the next week or so. Maybe we can do make-your-own pizzas tonight? Maggie and I have fun with it, and Jack always loves pizza.

SUNDAY (10/27): We haven't had Enchilada Casserole in the crock pot since the first time I made it. And there's usually some extra, since there may be an extra person or two in our garage working on the race car.

Wish List

Nah, it isn't my birthday or Christmas or anything, but I've got a few things I'd pick up right away if I had a sudden windfall. Wondering what you should get for me if YOU have a sudden windfall? Here's a list! :D

  • Some light colored jeans-ish pants to go with my black shirts. (I have a thing against black and blue intentionally 'together.') These (blush, size 6 with the 32" inseam) or these (apricot, size 6 with the 32"inseam) are cute.
  • More Wen cleansing conditioner. It makes my hair and scalp feel so much better!
  • A hair trim :)
  • More underwear (yeah, maybe we can sum a few of these up with a Victoria's Secret gift card!)
  • Totally random, but while we're wishing? I need more shirts. And hoodies.
  • Dana Wilde's book: Train Your Brain
  • A book on calligraphy. Because I want nicer handwriting/printing. Suggestions?
  • Knee-high brown boots. With very little or no heel.
And of course I reserve the right to add to this list ;)

04 October 2013

Who I REALLY Am.

I've been pretending all this time.

I wanted you all to like me. So I've been very non-confrontational and tried to never say anything that could upset anyone. And it apparently didn't work anyway.

So here's who I really am.

I'm a proud breastfeeding mother. I nursed my daughter for two and a half years, and my son for two years so far. I nurse in public, wherever my baby is hungry (although after 18-months or so, I really try to just distract until I'm back in the comfort/privacy of my own home. Nursing an active toddler can be challenging!).

I believe in a pregnancy and birth process with as few interventions as possible. But a happy & healthy baby and mama are always the ultimate goal.

I am a gun owner (well, actually that's hubby, but I'm supportive). Once I don't constantly have a child in my hands, I intend to get my concealed weapon permit. Not because I want to carry a weapon all the time, but because it's in my house and I want the proper training to deal with it in the most beneficial way. It's my right.

I believe in selective and delayed vaccines. When I started kindergarten (you know, back when we rode dinosaurs to school), there were only a handful of shots 'required.' There are now close to 30. No, thank you. And they're all based on age. The size of babies at six months varies GREATLY. Shouldn't a drug dose vary accordingly?

I'm not a christian. I was raised as one, and I've even taught Sunday School decades ago, but the idea of one god ceased being a comfort or believable concept for me. I believe in the goodness in the world, and in doing 'right,' but I don't need anyone's imaginary friend to tell me how to do this. The ideas I most closely align with are wiccan. But even with that I'm solitary (subscribing to no one tradition strictly, and not belonging to any specific coven or group).

Whew. Glad to have all that off my chest. I'll probably think of more later.

Anything surprise you? Make you decide you don't like me after all? I hope not.

Happy Second Birthday, Jack!

Oh, my boy. You are certainly two.

When you're happy, the whole world can't help but smile with you. When you're not happy, though..look out!

The full happy squeal lasts just a minute, then you usually look pretty content or contemplative about the world around you. I call you my grumpy old man much of the time, but I know you're keeping that smile on the inside.

Every time you climb up on me when you're supposed to be going to sleep, and I find it's just so you can give me another kiss, you melt my heart a little more.

I can't wait to hear everything you have to say, but at the same time I don't want to rush you growing up. Because you are my baby. Our family is complete.

It's hard to talk about you without mentioning your sister, since she was everything I knew about babies and toddlers until you came along. You made my previous knowledge frequently useless, but that's okay. It's an adventure I love to learn about you. And I'm pretty sure you don't mind having your sister mentioned in your birthday post, as she is definitely your favorite.

That overpowering joy that you just can't hold back? I get to see it every day when your sister walks off her school bus. You run to her, giggling and screaming her name, until you hug each other and we begin the walk home. It would only take five minutes by myself, but you have so much exploring to do every day that it takes much, much longer. But I hate to rush you when you're enjoying yourself so much.

Thank you, Jack, for choosing us as your family. I hope we always love each other as much as we do now, or even more.
