TV Nostalgia

I read a lot of Facebook updates and talk to plenty of people who have their whole weekly schedule planned around their TV viewing goals. I don't ever remember watching many shows at once. I think if I ever did, it stopped when I gave up TV one year for Lent while I was in high school (and no, I was never Catholic). After giving TV up for that long, I just never was really into it after that.

Don't get me wrong - there have been a few shows that I haven't missed. My little guilty pleasures, but usually only one (okay, maybe two) at a time. Right now it's 24. Don't even try to contact me on Monday nights between 9 and 10 PM. I mean it. I almost considered rescheduling our honeymoon because I was missing the season finale on a cruise ship. It's not just a TV show for me - Jack Bauer is counting on my help!

I had a similar passion years ago for Dark Angel with Jessica Alba. Anyone remember that one? If you're nearby and don't remember - don't worry - I have both seasons on DVD. It was about life after the giant electromagnetic pulse that wiped out most of our data-centered lives as we know them. And the main character was a genetically engineered (and very attractive) chick who had been on human growth hormone or whatever to make her 'super human.' The second season had some other un-humans who had been grown in a lab as well. I loved it!

The other shows I loved that come to mind were even...well, worse. Rock of Love and Daisy of Love. Yeah, I could even admit at the time that they were never quality entertainment, but they sure were fun to watch for a while. My problem now is that since they were 'reality' television, there's no point in watching re-runs, since the eliminations are already finished....

What shows have you loved and now miss? Or what's your favorite now, and why should I try and watch it?

A Fun Winter Memory

As much as I gripe about the cold and snow, I had to put up one of my favorite winter pictures. Maggie asks a few times a week to go out and sled or make a 'snowman' (her definition is pretty liberal - she just wants to hold a piece of snow). Unfortunately, other than Maggie's cuteness, none of these activities hold any appeal for me. Luckily her daddy feels the opposite. He loves the cold and snow, and all the fun activities they can do outside.

On Monday he hurried home from work to get back while there was still a bit of daylight so he could build a wonderful snowman with his favorite helper. We made sure to get some pictures of the snowman, including its hair, arms and face. Maggie still asks about him every time we come home, "Is that my snowman?" Why yes, Maggie, it is.

Snow, Snow....GO AWAY!

I know there are good parts about living in the great white north of Michigan (at least it's white this year!). We don't have earthquakes like California, and you know, Chicago a few weeks ago... We don't have hurricanes. We don't need pleasanton motorcycle accident attorney - since no one sane is riding a motorcycle in our slushy frozen tundra. We also don't have the creepy bugs that flourish in warmer climates (but we won't talk about mosquitos).

What do you love or hate about where you live? I don't have much comparison basis - I've been within a half hour of here for the vast majority of my life.

10 Random Things for Friday

  1. I'm tired of the snow. It stopped me from going to a play date I was really looking forward to today. Bad snow, bad!
  2. Which leaves me really worried about getting to Disney on Ice tomorrow. And I've been really looking forward to that too!
  3. I think I've had a crappy enough week - I deserve some fun and so does Maggie!
  4. I'm not worried about missing the comedy club tonight because hubby will drive his car, and nothing stops him.
  5. I'm afraid the snow is also frightening people into canceling plans for next month - like their chocolate parties! I've suddenly got open dates and leftover chocolate martinis - want to schedule a show and help me use up my surplus of goodies?
  6. Maggie went to bed with a wet head last night and now I can't get all the tangles out :( I think we'll go for one more forced brushing and put in a pony tail.
  7. Even when Maggie gives me trying days, I still want to get all my cardiac stuff taken care of ASAP and try to get pregnant again. What a struggle.
  8. "Maggie - Get the dinglehopper out of your hair and eat your noodles!"
  9. I'm in the mood to watch Princess and the Frog again. Anyone know when it comes out on DVD? (Yes, I know the wise and powerful Google probably knows.)
  10. How could anyone not enjoying having stories read to them? I'm completely mesmerized by Reading Betwen the Lions reading Trosclair to me right now...

Are You Still There??

Sorry I sort of disappeared for...almost a week! Holy cow! Hopefully hubby got the health savings account set up, because I've been making use of it this week.

On Tuesday I had a TEE (trans-esophageal echocardiogram). It's a really fun procedure where they go down your throat to take a better look at your heart (since the esophagus and the heart are right next to each other). At the hospital I went to, anyway, they knock you out, then thread the little ultrasound wand to where the view is. The procedure itself takes about ten minutes. Yeah, for real. But you're out for about an hour (at least I was). It was truly not a big deal. That night I went and did a chocolate show (although hubby had to drive me, since they recommend not driving for 24 hours because of the anesthesia).

Wednesday was the really fun day, though. I got horribly, dreadfully, sicker than I ever remember being. I couldn't keep down sips of water. When hubby got home from work, I asked him to google TEE complications to see if I was dying. He came back and told me that nausea and vomiting are common side effects of the procedure or the anesthesia. Since I've never had an issue with anesthesia before, I can only assume that I never, ever again want a tube shoved down my throat for a look-see.

10 Random Things for a Friday

  1. Dove's new Milk Chocolate and Peanut Butter baking bits are quite yummy.
  2. I had a bunch of random things I wanted to write earlier, but now they've all slipped away...
  3. I'm planning on leaving Entrecard soon, but that deserves its own whole post for why and what I'll be doing instead.
  4. Cardiologist consult went well this morning. Turns out I'll be having my procedure done by a pediatric cardiologist at the Children's Hospital. This is quite amusing to me since I'm 37 :)
  5. Tomorrow night hubby and I will sleep without out baby in the house for the first time. She's staying at Mimi and Papa's since she was going to be there while we went out, then we're all going to my brother and SIL house on Sunday.
  6. We went out for brunch this morning and I'm still finding syrup spots on my body. I didn't even eat anything that involved syrup. Ew.
  7. Don't you hate it when you call someone and they answer the phone...then tell you they're not there. I know it's you! If you're busy, I can handle it. Tell me the truth instead of looking like a dork.
  8. I'm letting Maggie power-nap today because I need to call my hostess for tomorrow around 6 PM. She (Maggie, not necessarily my hostess) got up extra early this morning, and then fought her nap for a 1/2 hour anyway.
  9. I think the Mucinex D is completely destroying my appetite. I'm not usually a big eater anyway, but this week I totally skipped dinner twice, and never really felt hungry.
  10. My Sashay party was a success - I'm looking forward to going to the one my friend booked for next month with the new product - yay!

17 February 2010

I'm a Hippopotamus...

Maggie and I love this song/video!

Random Tuesday Thoughts

randomtuesday

I think Mucinex D may be my new friend. I took a dose when we go home an hour or so ago and I think I'm feeling better. I wish I didn't get chest colds that hold on for weeks.

On that note, I think NailTek is my friend too. I think my bloody stumps are finally starting to grow out - yay!!

Happy Anniversary to me and hubby :) Four years ago we went before the judge with our friend Jay and some random other witness and got married before hitting the road and driving to Miami to leave on our honeymoon cruise. We mailed the surprise announcements of our elopement on our way out of town.

I got to have leftover chili with lots of cheddar cheese for lunch. Yum!

I had to share my success with an old-wives tail remedy for Maggie's cough last week. She started coughing on Tuesday, so I started coating her feet with Vick's Vapor Rub before putting on her footie pjs at night. Her cough was considerably better within a day or two, and is now almost totally gone! Her last cough lasted weeks...

I do not like driving in the snow. Even a little bit. If it could not snow next Tuesday - the day we have to leave the house the earliest for gymnastics - I would appreciate it. We got nailed with a blizzard last Tuesday, and today there were flurries. Ugh!

Fun Kids' Giveaway

I love attention-getting titles. No, I'm not giving away kids. I only have one so far to start with, and I'm keeping her.

The giveaway I was actually trying to reference is through Hip Mama's Place for the new series of Kohl's Cares for Kids books and matching stuffed creatures. We still love the one we got at the holidays and wish we'd gotten more for Maggie. Hopefully we'll win one of these Dr Seuss themed ones. Or at $5 each for the books and animals, maybe we'll get off our lazy tushies and go out in the cold to get some :)

Head over to Hip Mama's Place before February 21 to enter. If you don't have a kid who wants em, you can always pass them on to little Maggie ;)

14 February 2010

Happy Valentines Day!!

Hope you had a very nice Valentines, whatever that means to you. We 'celebrated' all weekend, but with a toddler around, the chaos and celebration never ends, right?
Friday night we just enjoyed finally having hubby home. Maggie was thrilled to play with her daddy til bedtime.
Yesterday I got my work done (going to the post office and picking up a few groceries) early, then the three of us went and tracked down a couple more old ski hills for hubby's blogging project. Our beef stew was warm and waiting in the crock pot when we got home, and I opened up a box of Dove Sea Salted Caramels to start celebrating with my sweeties. They're so good we don't rush through eating the box then have to click here and worry about gaining extra weight over them! I think over half the box is still left!
Today Maggie and hubby took me to my church class, then we went to celebrate a three-year-old friend's birthday. Hubby and I watched (500) Days of Summer together from Netflix after Maggie was convinced to go to sleep. Now I'm headed to sleep as well, but I still have leftovers from the local Mongolian BBQ place for lunch tomorrow - yay!
It was a great Valentines weekend!

A Penny Saved?

There are some things you just can't cut corners on. Last time hubby and I went out to do our grocery shopping together, I was out of face cream. Since he was watching, I got the most 'economical' (read: cheap) bottle I could find. Yuck, yuck, yuck! It's so watery I feel like I'm using half the bottle to try and get my face to absorb anything and feel soft! It's all I've got for now, so I keep slathering it on, but next time I'm going to get the stuff I like, regardless of the cost. For some things, it's worth it. My penny saved was only a penny after all...

10 Random Things for a Friday

  1. Our story time reader didn't show up this morning! I hope she's okay. This is a story-time we go to kind of regularly, and it's weird for her to just stand us up like that! She missed a full house too - there were probably close to ten kids waiting for story time. Luckily Maggie and I met new friends though. Another girl and her mom who we'd seen there before were there again, and with no story time we spent our time visiting with Brooke, Temperance and Nana (I'm pretty sure Nana wasn't her real name, but that's all I caught today :D ).
  2. Hubby commented about my diet sucking yesterday. Not that I need weight loss products (and if I did he'd be way too bright to mention it ;) ), but that I still don't eat enough, especially of things like proteins. I honestly sometimes wish I could just take a pill to cover my caloric and nutritional needs. :(
  3. The snow is much more tolerable when the roads are cleared.
  4. I'm quite proud that this week I've made five business-related calls each day that I wasn't getting ready for a show. That is just my weekday goal, I've decided. Weekends are spent with family stuff. Five calls is usually manageable, provided Maggie takes at least an hour nap.
  5. This is only number five? I need to quit saying so much or I'll never get to ten!
  6. I miss my ergonomic keyboard. My wrist hurts after only this little bit of typing...
  7. I think hubby is planning to do our taxes very soon. Don't let me forget to tell him I didn't buy my plane ticket for conference (he did) so I don't know how much it cost - but it is deductible!
  8. My hair is at a pretty awkward in-between length. I think I look like a mushroom, but I hate to have it cut any shorter again while I'm trying to grow it longer. I'm sure a lot of you feel my pain.
  9. I spent an hour and a half sleeping in the crib last night at Maggie's request. I am decidedly taller/longer than the crib.
  10. We're having chili for dinner. With lots of cheddar cheese on top. I have a very active imagination for someone who hasn't started cooking it yet...

10 February 2010

What's That? You Want More Giveaways?

You can win a charm bracelet. The giveaway runs until 2/20. The bracelets are adorable, with different color heart charms already included - your choice!

Another super multi-purpose giveaway? The Divine Miss Mommy will be drawing to giveaway a $25 gift card to Macy's on 2/15.

Random Tuesday Thoughts

randomtuesday

There is actually good progress being made in my office! I wasn't going to post it, and just see if hubby noticed, but I'm way too impressed with myself so far. I couldn't fall asleep last night thinking about how nicely it's shaping up.

This morning was Maggie's first gymnastics class! We loved it! They do activities in circuits, and the teacher shows everyone first, then wanders around and helps everyone with different stuff. It's a perfect set-up since everyone has to be spotting their own child all the time anyway. I super loved the floor! The whole thing absorbs every step you take - it feel so nice!

It is definitely/finally snowing here. Maggie and I had to get to class by 9:30, so we headed out of here around 9. It was already snowing out, but it only looked like a dusting. Yikes! Even after stopping before turning my silly car wanted to go sideways around every corner. Don't get me wrong - I love my car - but rear-wheel drive doesn't really cut it in this junk.
After class we went to the store to get diapers and toilet paper and other things I want if we're staying in for a few days. When we made it home at 11:45, I shoveled the driveway. Did you read that, honey? The driveway was cleared at least once during this storm.

And on that note, the mail came later on and I think there's supposed to be a movie from Netflix. I'll watch it tonight, if I brave the snow to go get the mail!

The snow reminds me of one other thing - brush off your cars, people!!! Seriously, I'm on a reasonably busy road. The number of cars I'm seeing drive by with just what their windshield wipers have cleared off the front windshield? You can't see where you're going! Pet peeve everytime it snows. I had to brush off my car twice today. You can do it too.

08 February 2010

Thanks for the heads up from Freaky Frugalite!

Is your cat plotting to kill you?

Maggie Cuteness...

Before I forget, here's a couple conversations with Maggie lately.

First off, last Friday we stopped by my old office to meet a friend for lunch. We stopped to visit with another woman I worked with named Lara. Lara is pregnant and was absolutely taken with cute lil Maggie. She came around the counter to show Maggie the toy box and converse with her.

Lara: You're so pretty!
Maggie: Look at my pretty eyes (as she opens her eyes wider).

Yup, I've held off on teaching her modesty. Who ever heard of a two-year-old with too much confidence??

****************************************

Saturday night after dinner, while hubby was doing the dishes and I was working on laundry, Maggie called out to me down the hall.

Maggie: Mommy! I'm pooping!
Me: Would you like to sit on the potty and poop?
Maggie: No, I'm playing with my dollhouse.
Me: Are you still pooping?
Maggie: [GRUNT] Nope.

Knowing is supposed to be half the battle, right?

Uphill Both Ways in the Snow!

I was talking with a woman a couple nights ago with whom I ended up having several things in common. We were both in direct sales, and we had both started out with a college education in retail merchandising and marketing. It was funny talking about the 'good old days.' When we had started working in our chosen fields, it was mostly about customer service. I told her about the internet retailer I used to work for, and how we actually tracked every bit of traffic coming into our site. We needed to know what worked and what didn't, and it was a few years before all of the seo optimization software that later became available. We needed to figure out for ourselves what worked and what didn't. Pioneers in the field, essentially. The conversation finally ended in laughter. Neither of us is old enough to have stories about riding a dinosaur to school or walking barefoot, uphill, both ways in the snow. It was reminding us of how old we used to think grown-ups were. Now we've become the grown-ups. Scary!

52 to Fabulous! - Pick a Wall

Well, my assignment this week for 52 to Fabulous was to pick one wall at a time and make it, well, fabulous! I'm making it my goal to go for one wall period, never mind 'at a time.' Here's the wall I see when I walk into my office. It is immediately to my left as I sit facing the computer. The adorable table would make a great staging area for using it and my limited desk space (since my desk is more of a 'computer' desk than a traditional desk with a work surface). Looking at it now, especially in a picture that the whole world could see, is a bit embarrassing.

Another goal that folds right into making this wall fabulous is that this is the spot that would be perfect for my personal altar or vision board. The vision board is one of the assignments I've missed on 52 to Fabulous, but I chose not to make it up right away because I want something I can display and be proud of, and right now I don't have a place to do that! We've talked about personal altars in my Cakes for the Queen of Heaven class. So no one is confused and thinks I'm practicing ritual sacrifice in my office, here's a brief description of a wiccan altar from Wikipedia:
The items brought to the altar may be a random assortment of personally significant items or a particular set with ritual significance. Traditionally, altar items may include but are not limited to: candles of significant colors, cups or bowls or cauldrons, small statues of gods and goddesses, a ritual knife which in most traditions must never be defiled by being used to cause damage, a wand, a bowl of salt, a bell, and possibly some crystals. The altar is usually covered in some sort of cloth. Some traditions separate the items on the altar into the four Greek classical elements, of earth, air, fire and water

Think of it as a collection of special things. On our altar at class we have pictures of important women to us, symbols of power, and goddess figures. I love the idea of it and think it would work well as a small part of my office (which is the most 'me' place in the house).

So my goal for the near future is to come up with an 'after picture to follow-up with this. Wish me luck!

Easy Fix?

I am working up the nerve to post a picture of one of the walls of my office. You've heard before that it's...well...a bit cluttered. Still functional for me, but probably not for anyone else. I wish there was an easy fix, like hemorrhoid treatment cream fixing under-eye circles? A dusting stick that would push everything into manageable piles. Or even just make it disappear. Boy, wouldn't those be in demand. For now, I'm hoping the picture will shame me into just getting it picked up once and for all.

A Few Giveaways!

What could be more summertime than Popsicles?? Head on over to Confessions of a Psychotic Housewife for your chance to WIN Popsicles (don't worry, they'll keep in the freezer til it warms up enough to enjoy them ;) ).

Like gum? Like art? Check out the artistic Dentyne gum (you'll have to go look to see what I'm talking about!) over at Confessions of a Psychotic Housewife.

How about truffles? Stop by MamaBuzz where Fancy Lady Gourmet Truffles is giving away custom cake truffles (and a 10% discount if you can't wait to win!).

Feel like getting organized (don't I always?)? Frugal with a Flourish is giving away a set of baskets with pretty little liners. Hurry on this one - it's done on February 7!

Wow! Over at Jaebumfangirl, she's giving away a Coach wallet she's never used! Whew! Don't see that very often. There's lots of entries already, and she's keeping it open until the end of February (good thing it's a short month!). The extra entries are for tweeting instead of blogging - if you're into twitter and don't want the wallet, I'd take it off your hands ;)

I'd be remiss if I didn't use this time to also give a huge shout out to Mama Kennedy, who finds most of these giveaways for me! Be sure and check out her blog regularly :)

Why Do I Do This?

So someone started a Facebook group remembering people who have graduated (or would have graduated) from my high school, who died. While it isn't quite as bad as it may sound, it certainly isn't cheerful. It isn't just my graduating class, and some of them graduated long before me, but some graduated with me, or after me. Reading about people dying makes me feel sad, and old. It should be a few years before I need to find the best joint supplement, but reading the wall posts make me think I could be gone by the end of the week.

Is there a group like this for all high schools, or are we morbidly unique?

Friday Fill Ins

Thanks to Mama Jodi for reminding me about Friday Fill-Ins! What will your answers be?

1. I know I'm lucky to have such a well-behaved girl.
2. Months with 31 days are the longest month.
3. You can't help but smile back at cute kids.
4. I'm ready to rule; bring it on!
5. Where have you looked for work that you love?
6. Grocery shopping money is now available.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to seeing hubby before he leaves on another work trip next week, tomorrow my plans include chillin and bloggin and Sunday, I want to use my coupon for a free meal at Logans!

Bills, bills, bills

It always kind of bums me out when I go with a post title like this one and it auto-fills...meaning I've already used it. Not that paying bills bothers me that much, but sometimes the monotony of my life isn't exactly uplifting. Each month it's mortgage, car insurance, utilities and medical bills (lately...). At least I talked the powers that be into holding off on the student loan for another six months.

You know, because I need a degree to be hanging out with Maggie all day. She is definitely smart, but any manipulating she gets away with isn't because of something she's learned in college that I haven't. It's her darn cuteness.

People say that my college degree makes it so I can tell Maggie how important it is to continue her education. I suppose I can say that, but I don't entirely agree with it. I feel it's very important to be doing something you love. There are jobs that people love and make a living wage at that don't require a college degree. Yes, I know there are more opportunities available with my degree, but the jobs I've loved best haven't used my degree - like being a mom :)

10 Random Things for a Friday

  1. Story time again! I've been trying to go to more story times offered by different groups. This morning is Kindermusik's free story time at a local coffee shop. Yay!
  2. I booked a Sashay Jewelry party for February 17. I'll also have new Dove Chocolate stuff to sample that day. Who's in?
  3. I am SO ready for spring. But before it's too nice, I would like to go check out more ski hills with hubby for his blog...Maybe this weekend...
  4. I'm really bothered by the appearance of my hands lately. Besides still having lame stubby nails, my poor skin looks old, and my hands look more wrinkley :(
  5. Maggie's word of the day yesterday was "Palaeobatrachus." Yeah. It was the dinosaur featured on Dinosaur Train, and she repeated that mouthful of a name with the paleontologist guy. (And you won't believe how long it just took me to look up the name so I'd spell it right...)
  6. Don't let me forget to bring the salty snack to my Cakes class on Sunday...
  7. I did my regular thing last night. Because I worked (a chocolate open house) over dinner time, I just never got around to eating. Now? I'm very hungry.
  8. I haven't done any more toward my 52 to Fabulous projects, other than thinking (and feeling guilty that I haven't done any more. I hate when that happens).
  9. I still have the stuff to make these really yummy peanut butter dessert bars. That may be on the agenda very soon....
  10. As a friend asked me earlier this week, what did people do before those plastic storage containers? I got two new ones for different types of Maggie's toys last week, and I could use a bunch more. Always.

04 February 2010

This Month's 'Holiday'

No, I'm not talking about Presidents' Day. I mean Valentine's Day! Do you have big plans? We probably won't do much more than go out for dinner sometime that weekend, and we'll probably bring Maggie with us :) Our wedding anniversary is even that week, but really - we get to celebrate with each other pretty regularly, right?

Right now, I'm shivering and tired. If I had to plan a V-Day dream date right now, it would probably involve a nice warm jacuzzi tub (somewhere they hopefully clean the spa filter), something warm and yummy for my tummy, probably some champagne (just because I'm a sucker for champagne) and snuggling up with my hubby in a super soft bed with the piles of soft, heavy covers (anything beyond that wouldn't make my site very family-friendly, now would it?).

If you could just decide what you want to do for February's big holiday, what would it be?

Random Tuesday Thoughts

randomtuesday

Hubby's home again. Apparently the team decided to hurry home last night (instead of coming home today or possibly tomorrow...). He got in about 9 last night. Yay for surprises! Sorry I didn't get some of the stuff I wanted to get done around the house to make him happy :)

All three of us went to story time this morning. It was fun. Unfortunately Maggie and I won't be going back to that story time for a couple months because starting next week, it's immediately following our gymnastics class on the other side of town. I'm not the sort of mom who wants her kid in a billion classes at a time. I'd rather stick to a few enjoyable outings a week.

Tonight we headed to the movies! I'd been wanting to take Maggie to see The Princess and the Frog, but we hadn't fit it in so far. I was beginning to worry we wouldn't make it while it was still in the theater! One local theater was only showing matinees of it by now, but the other had a 6:55 PM showing - perfect timing for Maggie to get a nap, then all of us to enjoy dinner before heading out to top it off with popcorn - yay! We all liked the movie and the musical score. Maggie was dancing in the aisles, especially during the first song with the crocodile and the fireflies.

You'd think an 'easy' job like picking out a new picture to print and put in a frame in the living room would get done - maybe even knocking less pleasant jobs further down the list? But no....we still have a nail with nothing on it since we took down the picture with Santa Claus...

I signed up with another fun website - Formspring.me. On it, people can ask you questions, and you can answer them. It's easy to link to your blog, Facebook or Twitter account and find out what your friends really want to hear from you. Have you got a question for me? Ask it here!

A Fun Way to Spend a Week

When I went to Mimi and Papa's to pick up Maggie yesterday afternoon, everyone was just sitting down to dinner as we arrived. I figured I'd missed the whole party. Luckily no one was in a hurry to head out afterwards, so Maggie got to play with her cousin (and so did I!) for a while after dinner.

Once the rest of the family was on their way home, Maggie wanted to go downstairs and play 'fishing.' I thought it sounded interesting. Not as much of an escape as Outer Banks rentals or anything, but a pleasant way to pass the evening. Boy was I in for a treat!

What Maggie had been doing with Mimi and Papa while I was gone, and now I finally got to do as well, was play Wii! That's right - until yesterday afternoon I was the last person alive (I'm pretty sure) who had never played Wii. As it turns out, I'm not too bad at bowling - I think it's the natural-born athlete in me ;) Just about all the games I tried were fun, even if the age-rank thingy says I'm older than either of my parents (I was 53, mom was 49 and dad was 25!). I'll try not to take it personally.
